I feel like our country is the little kid in the family trying its best to be like an adult. We see the adults do things and we want to do them too, but we don't fully understand all the back-end it takes to get it working right. We just see the front part, and copy only what we see.

So, we sign international conventions and write laws, but they are not weighty enough to serve as any real deterrent or meat out any real justice, and worse, the procedures don't take you all the way through the various scenarios. Officers have to make it up as they go along when a client poses something for which there is no procedure; written procedures change mid-stream when it is realized that it is not actionable; etc. The necessary support system of trained staffing, appropriate payment structure and coverage, and correct infrastructure is typically not in place. Systems that ensure fairness, distribution of resources, proper care for the poor and elderly, sustainable living for all income brackets are simply not in place. We are striving to be the place to live, work, and do business, but I think we first need to stop playing dolly house and start thinking through our domestic situations holistically and thoroughly.
